Tips for Arranging a WESTEC Training Day
Administration
- Start planning several months in advance
- Avoid Mondays and Fridays as all registrars not on call/leave should be able to attend and trust staffing on these days is important
- It is helpful for trainees to know the date 2-3 months in advance in order to apply for study leave
- Check the date doesn’t clash with other events such as BGS, GIM days &school holidays (fewer potential speakers around)
- Organising WESTEC as a group can take some of the stress out of it –this can be a stressful process!
- Involve the lead consultant for registrar training at your trust for advice, support and contacts
- Book a room early – depending on the trust these can be booked up quite far in advance
- Speak to your departments administration staff about organising pharmaceutical reps to supply lunch and/or funds for an external venue
- Contact speakers early
- Consider local consultants, allied health care professionals, external speakers, registrars, researchers.
Content
- The “theme” is pre-arranged (see timetable by STC reps) to ensure that the curriculum gets covered evenly over time
- Refer to the curriculum on the e-portfolio to guide the content of the day
- Consider content such as “advances in the field”, innovative work or current research topics
- Non-clinical presentations get positive feedback (SCE tips/practice,leadership, management, service development and setting up services, career development, preparing for interview/consultant application, writing a business case)
- Practical sessions get positive feedback (Dix-Hallpike, Epley, knee aspiration, CVC line)
- Consider your registrar colleagues (Geris and other specialities) – there may be interesting research (talk to the ACFs), audit and QI projects (talk to the QI fellows) going on at your trust
- Beware of speakers dropping out at last minute – it happens – consider having a presentation as a back up
